Ghana is set to host a Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant that will serve the West African market following a new partnership agreement with South Korea, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.

Ablakwa disclosed the development after co-chairing the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea alongside South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

According to the minister, the planned Hyundai manufacturing facility forms part of broader efforts by Ghana and South Korea to deepen economic cooperation, promote industrialisation, and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

He stated that both countries remain committed to building a mutually beneficial partnership that will drive sustainable economic growth and development.

The minister noted that Ghana and South Korea already collaborate across several sectors, including energy, agriculture, maritime affairs, education, shipbuilding, road infrastructure, and healthcare.

He revealed that the two nations are currently advancing major initiatives such as the establishment of a new university in Ghana, the Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant, and the deployment of solar-powered irrigation systems.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana, establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana, and launch new solar irrigation systems,” Ablakwa said.

He added that both countries had agreed to expand cooperation into emerging sectors, including artificial intelligence, energy, and critical minerals.

“Additionally, we agreed to have collaboration in AI and new partnerships for energy and critical minerals,” he stated.

Ablakwa also disclosed that discussions on a visa waiver arrangement between Ghana and South Korea were progressing. He noted that diplomatic and service passport holders are already covered under existing arrangements, while negotiations continue on broader access.

The announcement comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and South Korea next year, with both countries expressing optimism about expanding cooperation across strategic sectors and strengthening economic ties.

The Hyundai plant is expected to boost Ghana’s industrial capacity, create jobs, and position the country as a key automotive manufacturing hub for the West African region.
