Reasons Why Messi-Aguero Duo Won’t Work For Barcelona

It was the end of an era at Manchester City this season as their prime weapon Sergio Aguero decided to leave the club. Having spent a decade at the club and after winning every possible accolade except the Champions League, which they might this season, the Argentine forward has made up his mind to leave the city of Manchester and Premier League and join Barcelona.

Many experts are of the opinion that this move of the Argentine striker has been influenced due to
the presence of one of his closest friends and national team colleagues there in the form of Lionel Messi.

The duo of Aguero and Messi, however, has not been able to be very successful in the international arena while playing together. The experts are also of the opinion that this will affect their gameplay at the club level as well and the Messi-Aguero duo won’t be able to make a mark playing alongside each other from the next season onwards.

However, there are also speculations that Messi might be leaving the club as he came close to turning this worst fear of every Barcelona fan into reality at the start of the last season but now with Aguero coming into the side this summer, it is very unlikely that the talisman of the Catalan club will leave them.

There are a number of experts whose opinion is that the Aguero- Messi duo will not work at Barcelona. They also have quite a few reasons in favor of this argument and we will have a look at a few of them in the following lines.

As we know, Messi prefers to play as the main man for Barcelona, leading their attack from the front. There have been many previous occasions when players, who are known to play as center-forwards, had to sacrifice their position to allow Messi to play a central role in the attack and it is quite unlikely that Aguero will have a different experience.

This means that he will have to change his playing style for his new club, which can affect the chemistry of the duo up front.

Though this is a distant possibility, if Antoine Griezmann, who also plays as a striker for Barca, hits the ground running with his performance in the next season, we might not see Aguero being included in the starting lineup on a regular basis.

The Frenchman has not been in his best form since arriving from Atletico Madrid but showed glimpses of his brilliance towards the fag end of the last term, which can see the Argentine striker sitting out on quite a few occasions in the next season.

Both Messi and Aguero are seemingly very fond of each other and are known to admire each other very much. However, this has not helped them in building good chemistry while playing for Argentina.

Experts are of the opinion that this might be a significant factor when it comes to the duo being successful while playing for the Blaugrana as their failure as a striker duo in the national team can come to haunt them in the club ranks as well.

The Dutch manager of Barcelona, Ronald Koeman, is due to hear about his future from club President Joan Laporta. However, if he stays, then he might look to use Griezmann to lead the attack rather than Aguero.

Also, he is supposed to bring in Memphis Depay from Lyon, which might see Messi starting alongside the Dutchman and Griezmann under Koeman’s tenure as the Barcelona manager.
