SUG Demand Justice For Student Who Died In Septic Tank

The student Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State has demanded justice for one of her female students who died after falling into a septic tank popularly known as soak-away put.

The Institution, yesterday, was thrown into mourning as it lost a female 100-level student who was identified as Miss Heritage Ajibola.

It was gathered that the deseased who was in her mid twenties fell into a poorly constructed septic tank at Bver Hostel and died with no one noticing it.

The sad event took place on Wednesday, February 09, 2022 after she attended lectures in the morning.

It was learned that the late Heritage Ajibola was newly admitted into the University to study Linguistics and African Languages.

Reacting to the incident, the students union president, Comrade Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan blamed Ajibola’s death on the hostel management, saying that her death could have been avoided if the septic tank was properly covered.

Olalekan alleged that the Bver Hostel Managment facilitated her death despite the high rentage it had collected from the students.

While praying for the repose of her soul, the students union president demanded justice for Ajibola, adding that the hostel authorities have questions to answer over the death of the maiden.

Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan said, “This incident is highly unfortunate. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends and course mates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

It must be noted that Heritage’s death was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite the huge amounts of money paid by students for rent.

The Management of the Hostel must answer for the death of Heritage. The Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage, with a view to forestalling a possible reoccurrence of this,” he said.

Earlier in November 2021, a student of the same institution was reportedly died under a mysterious circumstance at the hotel in November 2021 and was buried in a shallow grave, leading to the arrest of the hotel owner along with some of his workers.
