Ughelli North LGA Boss Allegedly Bribes Youths To Shelve Protest
Hon. Jaro Egbo, the Ughelli North Local Government Area Chairman, has allegedly bribed the ‘EndBadGovernance‘ protesters to shelve the HUNGER Protest in his locality.
The protesters, on the third day of the protest were connered to Igwhre-Ovie Primary School, Ughelli, where they received a modicum to desist from the protest.
Nigerians stormed the streets to protest against the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, whose policies and programmes have made life unlivable for the non-political class and average income earners.
The masses are between the devil and the red sea following the cost of living that has exerted the highest magnitude of hunger and hardship witnessed in Nigeria since the history of democracy.
The Nationwide protest, tagged End Bad Governance commenced on the August 01, 2024, which according to the organizers, is expected to end on August 10, 2024.
The protesters, however, demanded good governance, urging the government to end the scourge of hunger in the land and address corruption as well as high cost of premium motor spirit, PMS, otherwise known as fuel.
Other demands were tackling of incessant killings and kidnappings, herdsmen attack on farmers, reduction of high cost of governance, electoral reforms, among others.
Speaking, a protester who preferred anonymity after being paid by the Ughelli North LGA Boss, allegedly said, “Jaro Egbo paid us to stop protesting. He invited us to Igwhre-Ovie Primary School and gave us some money to cease protest,” he said.
Another protester said the council boss appealed the protesters to shun violent protest to avoid loss of lives and destruction of properties, arguing that the people should not be taken for granted.
He said, “I was involved in the protest. Hon. Egbo paid us to stop protesting. The government can’t take us for granted. I will have my fair share of money and continue with the protest if need be.”
Efforts to get the chairman’s reaction over the development was abortive as his phone was not reachable.
Nevertheless, there had been several efforts to frustrate the ongoing protest, ranging from shooting, tear-gasing to apprehension of the innocent protesters by the security agencies.
