The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has raised concerns about the unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items during the festive period.
This warning comes after a series of tragic incidents resulted in loss of lives and injuries in various parts of the country.
Recall that a stampede at a children’s fun fair in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left many others critically injured.
Also, a stampede during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, resulted in the death of 10 individuals and left many others injured.
Another incident occurred in Okija, Anambra State, where three people were confirmed dead and many others injured during a palliative distribution event.
The IGP, however, emphasized the dangers posed by these unorganized events, including the potential for stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives.
He called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to work together to establish a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives.
While cautioning groups and organizers of similar events to ensure the involvement of security agencies, the police boss said negligence on their part is criminal and would not be overlooked.
He encouraged the general public to prioritize their safety and tread with caution when participating in such events.
According to IGP, the Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at creating a safer and more structured environment for aid distribution, stating that he has ordered thorough investigations into the incidents and sympathized with the bereaved families, wishing those injured a quick recovery.
