The coordinator of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) zone B South – South, Comrade Victor Ogechukwu has reaffirmed that his administration would give zero tolerance to Epileptic Power Supply and fraudulent estimated billings across Delta State campuses.
He made the assertion during a meeting of NANS in Asaba, the state capital.
Comrade Ogechukwu said the deteriorating state of electricity distribution across tertiary institutions and students residential areas in the state has become a source of concern to NANS executive.
He said the report that came to NANS executive was a systemic failure to provide even the most basic level of service to the students community.
Comrade Ogechukwu said while the students were subjected to weeks of Epileptic or zero power supply that BEDC continued the unconscionable practice of distributing exorbitant estimated bills to Campuses and students lodges.
He said BEDC action is not just a service failure but a direct assault on the academic and financial welfare of Nigeria Students, describing the situation as unfortunate.
While saying that injuries to students is equally injuries to his administration, he said NANS executive would live no stone unturned to ensure the comfort of the students in the state.
He listed the core demands of NANS to include immediate end to the pay for darkness model ( charging students for energy they did not consume ) , immediate and transparent allocation of prepaid meters ( or whole current meters) to all students populated areas and the restoration of stable power supply.
Electricity according to him is a necessity for academic excellence and safety, saying that the persistent outage of electricity were hindering students ability to study and equally compromising security in off campus hostels.
Ogechukwu said ” NANS South – South is fully committed to protecting the interest of our constituents, we expect a concrete plan of action regarding the metering of campuses and students lodges within seven days.”
