Tension in Senate as Akpabio, Oshiomhole Disagree Over New Rules

From NewsDesk

A brief but intense confrontation disrupted proceedings in the Senate on Wednesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole clashed over the interpretation of recently amended Standing Orders.

The incident occurred during the review of the previous day’s Votes and Proceedings when Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) attempted to raise a point of order. Akpabio promptly ruled him out of order, explaining that Senate rules do not permit such interruptions at that stage of deliberation.

To clarify the position, the Senate President invited Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who affirmed that points of order are not admissible during the process. However, Oshiomhole continued to insist, escalating tensions in the chamber.

Chief Whip Tahir Monguno also intervened, cautioning Oshiomhole and warning of possible disciplinary action if the disruption persisted.

Akpabio thereafter issued a stern warning, stating that any further breach of order could result in Oshiomhole being removed from the chamber in accordance with Senate rules.

Order was eventually restored after about 15 minutes, allowing the Senate to proceed with its business. The Votes and Proceedings were subsequently adopted following a motion by Senator Adamu Aliero, seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The disagreement is believed to be linked to the Senate’s recent amendment of its Standing Rules ahead of the 2027 general elections. The revised provisions restrict eligibility for principal and presiding offices to senators who have served at least two consecutive terms immediately before nomination.

The changes effectively exclude new entrants into the 11th National Assembly from contesting key leadership positions, reinforcing the tradition of ranking and favouring returning lawmakers.

Senate leadership maintained that the amendment is intended to uphold parliamentary standards and ensure experienced leadership within the chamber.
