South Africa international and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South African Football Players Union confirmed the midfielder’s death on Saturday, describing it as an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, and the nation’s football community.

Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the World Cup and played a key role in helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history. Their campaign ended with a round-of-32 defeat to co-hosts Canada.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed profound shock over the player’s passing and urged the public to avoid speculation as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. I appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the privacy they need during this difficult time,” McKenzie said.

Police in South Africa said an investigation had been launched after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of death.

Adams displayed remarkable resilience during the World Cup after learning of his grandmother’s death just hours before South Africa’s opening Group A match against the Czech Republic, a game in which he started and helped his side secure a 1-1 draw.

The South African Football Players Union described Adams as a gifted footballer who proudly represented his country on the global stage.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. South African football has lost a gifted player and a young life that still had so much to offer,” the union said.

Born through the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC, Adams established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield talents before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the club, he won the South African league title and the CAF Champions League.

He also represented South Africa at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Bafana Bafana reached the semi-finals, before earning a place in coach Hugo Broos’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also paid tribute to the late midfielder, describing his death as deeply saddening.

“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. Jayden Adams will be sorely missed,” Infantino said.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by Adams’ family and Mamelodi Sundowns in due course.
