Why More Than 13,000 Security Personnel Are Needed In Enugu State – INEC

Afimag.com –

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that about 13,000 security operatives are needed in Enugu State for the general elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu state, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen recently said the security outfits will help conduct free and fair elections.

According to him, the security personnel would be redeployed to 4,145 polling units, 260 Registration Area Centres and collation centres across the 17 council of the state.

He said, “We are working ahead of the commission’s schedule and ensuring practical proactive implementation of all timelines of INEC in the state.

“We have continued to have constant meetings and engagement with stakeholders to ensure secured, free, fair and credible elections in Enugu state.

“We are ready to ensure that 2023 elections will be the best in the state especially with the use of technology.”

Recall that the Eastern part of Nigeria has been confronted with security threats arising from the suspected activities of Eastern Security Networks (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) whose leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is in detention.

The call for deployment of about 13,000 security personnel to Enugu State may be grounded on  the recent attacks on INEC facilities in the region, and various threats from a different faceless group that the 2023 general elections would not be conducted in the South East.
