The Citizens Rights Concern Enhancement Initiative (CRCEI), also known as the Human Rights Protection Congress, has expressed concern over the remand of human rights activist and social crusader, Comrade Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox, at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre following his arraignment before the Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Amb. Monday Enudi, the organisation said the charges filed against WongBox by the police relate to alleged cyberbullying, dissemination of false information and injurious online publications connected to accusations of land grabbing involving the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II.
According to CRCEI, WongBox pleaded not guilty to the charges before the court but was subsequently remanded pending further proceedings.
The group stated that, as an organisation committed to the promotion of human rights, justice, accountability and freedom of expression within the framework of the law, it remains guided by the principles of fair hearing and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.
CRCEI described Victor Ojei as a prominent voice in the human rights community who has consistently championed issues affecting vulnerable and underserved citizens through advocacy and activism.
While acknowledging the need to respect the judicial process, the organisation urged relevant authorities to ensure that WongBox’s fundamental rights are protected throughout the legal proceedings.
“We express great concern over this development and stand with WongBox in solidarity. An injury to a committed voice in the struggle for justice resonates deeply across the human rights community,” the statement read.
The Human Rights group also called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, to uphold professionalism and diligent policing in order to strengthen public trust, maintain order and sustain peace in the state.
While appealing to members of the activism community and stakeholders to remain peaceful and united, CRCEI called on her members to demonstrate solidarity with WongBox, avoiding actions capable of escalating tensions.
The group advised political actors against using state institutions to suppress dissenting voices, insisting that justice must prevail without interference or undue influence.
“We urge all stakeholders, supporters, civil society organisations and lovers of justice to remain peaceful, law-abiding and vigilant while the judicial process runs its course in a manner that favours justice over influence,” the statement added.
