Obidients Urge Atiku to Support Peter Obi for 2027 Presidency

Supporters of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, have called on former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and instead throw his weight behind Obi.

The call was made at the weekend during a series of peaceful rallies organised across Abia State to celebrate Obi’s 64th birthday.

The rallies, tagged the “One Million-Man March for Obi,” were held simultaneously in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Uzuakoli.

Addressing journalists in Umuahia, the Chairman of the Organising Committee and a leading coordinator of the Obidients in Abia State, Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, said the appeal to Atiku was a patriotic call for unity within the opposition coalition.

According to Obiesili, while Atiku has made notable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, the former Vice President’s “greatest sacrifice” would be to support Obi to clinch the presidential ticket of the proposed opposition alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.

“We commend the coalition of opposition parties against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, we appeal to the coalition to zone the presidential ticket to the South and consider Obi as the most viable candidate,” Obiesili stated.

He described Peter Obi as a transformational leader with national appeal, integrity, and the capacity for a “quick fix” to Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

“Obi is not just a politician. He represents a movement, an ideology of transparent leadership and compassion for the masses. He is admired across ethnic and religious divides for his exemplary character and advocacy for the poor,” Obiesili added.

The birthday rally, according to the organisers, was a voluntary show of solidarity with Obi’s ideals and a reflection of growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration.

Obiesili noted that no other politician in Nigeria today matches Obi in terms of public trust, adding, “If someone better comes tomorrow, we will also support them. But right now, Obi remains the symbol of the people’s hope.”

The Obidients’ demand underscores mounting pressure on Nigeria’s opposition parties to unify under a credible and widely accepted candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
