Trump Suspends Hormuz Escort Mission Amid Signs of Progress in Iran Talks

By Ifechukwude Elizabeth

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary suspension of a military operation designed to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, citing emerging progress in diplomatic engagements with Iran.

The initiative, codenamed “Project Freedom,” was launched to safeguard shipping and restore the steady flow of oil through the critical maritime corridor, which accounts for a significant share of global energy transit.

The operation followed a series of disruptions linked to heightened tensions in the Gulf region.

In a statement released via social media, Trump said the pause was reached by “mutual agreement” after consultations involving intermediary countries, including Pakistan.

He clarified that while the escort mission would be halted temporarily, broader U.S. restrictions targeting Iranian ports would remain in force.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier indicated that the offensive phase of the operation referred to as “Operation Epic Fury” had concluded after achieving its primary objectives.

Iranian state media, however, framed the development as a strategic setback for Washington, suggesting the move reflected an inability to fully secure maritime operations in the region.

Despite the pause, security concerns persist. Recent incidents including reports of attacks on commercial vessels have continued to undermine confidence among shipping operators. A UK-based maritime monitoring agency disclosed that a cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile in the strait, though further details remain unclear.

Regional tensions also remain elevated. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting missiles and drones for a second consecutive day, claims Tehran has denied.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it. Any disruption has immediate implications for international markets.

U.S. officials maintain that the suspension of the escort mission could create diplomatic space for renewed negotiations. However, analysts caution that unless shipping confidence is restored, tangible gains in trade normalization may remain limited.

Trump has reiterated his openness to a negotiated resolution and signaled plans for further consultations with key global stakeholders, including China and Japan, in the coming days.
