Nigeria’s Super Falcons will pursue qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the play-off pathway after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final encounter.
Cameroon secured victory through Nyadjou’s 19th-minute goal, which ultimately separated the two sides in a closely contested match.
Despite the setback, the Super Falcons created numerous scoring opportunities and mounted sustained pressure in search of an equaliser. However, Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina delivered an outstanding performance, making eight crucial saves to preserve her side’s lead and secure progression to the semi-finals.
The result means Nigeria will not obtain one of the automatic qualification places available through the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Under the tournament format, only the four teams that reach the semi-finals earn direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
As one of the quarter-finalists eliminated at this stage, Nigeria will now compete in the African play-off route alongside the other three defeated quarter-final teams.
The play-off competition presents another opportunity for the Super Falcons to continue their World Cup journey. The winner of the African play-off route will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs, where an additional place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be at stake.
While the defeat represents a disappointment for Nigeria’s ambitions of securing early qualification, the team remains firmly in contention for a place at the global tournament. The focus now shifts to the play-offs, where the Super Falcons will seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive and earn a ticket to Brazil.
