Two men have been arrested after operatives of the Anambra State Police Command recovered a six-round English-made pistol during a stop-and-search operation in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.
The recovery was made on the evening of September 26, 2026, when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, working with personnel of the Police Mobile Force, PMF 54, were conducting visibility patrol within the Nnewi metropolis.
The operatives stopped two men travelling on a Tiger 150 motorcycle without a registration number and subjected them to a search.
The suspects were identified as Ekwulugo Chiemierie Joseph, 33, and Enyiobi Geoffrey Somtochukwu, 29.
A search of the men led to the recovery of the pistol, after which they were taken into custody and are currently assisting the police with investigations.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command was investigating how the suspects came into possession of the firearm, where it was obtained and what it was intended to be used for.
Ikenga said investigators were also examining other circumstances surrounding the recovery and possible links that could assist the ongoing investigation.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the recovery demonstrated the importance of police visibility and coordinated stop-and-search operations in the Command’s intelligence-led and community-based policing strategy.
According to him, such operations are important for identifying and disrupting the movement of firearms and other dangerous weapons that could facilitate violent crimes.
The Commissioner assured residents of Nnewi and the wider Anambra State that the Command would sustain proactive patrols, intelligence-led operations and strategic stop-and-search activities across the state.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly provide the police with credible information about suspicious persons, movements or activities within their communities.
